Sports Cake

What I really wanted to title this post was.. balls balls balls, but since I laughed when I thought about it I figured maybe I shouldn't.

I got a request for a chocolate cake with different types of balls on it. I had made a football cake before, but this was a new challenge.
I made a 9 x 13 sheet cake and a lot of buttercream frosting. I colored it: leaf green, copper, no taste red and made a little bit of chocolate frosting that I colored black. I piped the green all over and used the other colors for the balls.
I shaped the balls with rice krispy treats. I was going to make the treats myself, but ran out of time so I just used the store bought ones. This was my first time playing with the rice krispys, as well, and they are much easier to shape than I thought they would be.
After I got the desired shape, I put it in on a toothpick in the foam (the same one I use for the lollies) and frosted with the star tip. This took a bit of time, but wasn't very difficult.
After I had all the pieces I transferred them onto the cake and piped Happy Birthday!

At first I thought of just buying the balls made out of plastic, but it's so much better when you can eat every part of the cake.

Lina's Lollies Take Two

I gave the lollies a second try and these were much easier and I think turned out tastier than the first ones. They are chocolate lollies, covered in chocolate and walnuts or coconut flakes. Monica S Photography took these photos for me :o) See more after the jump...

First Lollies

I was so excited to make my first "Lina's Lollies". These were so much more work than I thought they would be and I got a lot of ideas on how to improve them next time around.

I made the red velvet cake and the cream cheese frosting....

Made the balls...

Planet Cupcakes for Donovan

It's Donovan's birthday and he wanted some planet cupcakes. I made chocolate cupcakes with a bit of whipped cream frosting and fondant decorations.

After a couple hours of coloring fondant cutting out shapes this is what I got :o)

Happy Birthday Donovan!!!

Football Fun

Football season is starting... this means that every Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday for sure I will not be getting much of a conversation from my boyfriend. That's ok because I secretly like football too ;o) I made this cake for Superbowl 2010. It's a black magic cake that is probably my favorite, with buttercream chocolate and vanilla frosting piped all over and raspberry filling inside.

While decorating this cake I learned that if you hold your piping bag filled with frosting for too long in your warm tired hand (ok maybe it doesn't have to be tired but it was) it will melt a little and your pattern won't look so good... that's ok 2011 Superbowl here I come!!!

Flowers Flowers Flowers

These are vanilla cupcakes with buttercream frosting I made in March for a birthday. I forgot to take a picture of them and this one was taken last minute with my phone. I personally don't like the taste of buttercream, but it makes for such an easy frosting to decorate with. As you can tell I got to practice my rose on these.

First Fondant Cake

This was my first attempt with fondant. You can see a little imperfection there, but I think for the first time I did alright. I made this one for my boyfriend for Valentine's Day and colored all the fondant myself :o)

Graduation Celebration

This is a cake I made back in May for Papa's Graduation. I was so proud of him for finishing his degree at USF! It's a vanilla cake with strawberry preserves and swiss cream frosting. The logo and the sides are done with fondant.

The First Step...

Maybe not the very first step, but I guess I should put myself out there more. This blog will be for me, to keep track of the cakes I make and one day look back and say: "Wow, I have come a long way!" and for my friends and family to see some of the work I have done and put in their requests for special or maybe not so special occasions. After all, who needs an excuse to eat cake.

In just nine days I will be starting a doctorate program at USF and I'm not sure how that will change my life, I'm just sure it will. In the meantime I have to make some "planet cupcakes" for a 4-year old's birthday party and I couldn't be more excited!
